This con may have been my favorite con yet! I got some good shots, felt good in my cosplays, and the weather was to die for. I'm so happy I made the trip back to National Harbor and am already eagerly awaiting Katsucon 2018! But before I get too ahead of myself, let's recap 2017!
My journey to Katsucon started Wednesday night when I drove myself and Zach down to Kansas. Katsucon is the only convention I currently fly to and my only opportunity to fly with friends so instead of leaving separately from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas, we all just meet up at the Kansas City airport and leave from there! We spent the night at Tristan's place and left for the airport bright and early (well actually, not bright as the sun had not risen yet).
Tristan ended up getting stopped for like 20 minutes by TSA because of the foil in his Magic Cards LOL. Luckily we made it just on time to board with our group. Other than that flying was pretty painless as always thanks to Southwest. And boy, those were some quality peanuts.
We made it to the Gaylord pretty early (I think it was only noon) so I went ahead and did my makeup and wandered around the convention with Tristan.
We stopped and paid our respects to gazebo chan of course. As you can see in the background, people were already shooting!! I think the Victor back there was a guest of the con actually.
Anyways we spent a couple hours just hanging out and looking around. We also visted the famed CVS and I got myself a ham and crackers Lunchables (the best kind, if you disagree I will fight you about it). I'm just gonna dump a bunch of photos here because there wasn't too much going on haha.
Once it got a bit later we decided to line up for registration AND BOY WERE WE TOO LATE. By the time we got there the line already went aaaalll the way across the convention center. Like quite literally to the other end of that massive hallway, I'm not sure how they even kept that line going because we decided we would just try to get our badges Friday morning instead. We ducked out of line through some doors and found this empty industrial looking area with a bunch of stairs and decided to mess around and film some stuff for the vlog (which I will try and get up next week...maybe).
The hunger was real at this point so we left in search of the Chipotle Selena has told us about as well as did a little....sightseeing....around National Harbor (Why was this statues dick out? Why was he riding a turtle? Why is his FUPA game so strong? I have so many questions). Anyways food was real good, babbs first Chipotle. (CHIPOTLE COUNT: 1)
I turned in pretty early due to waking up at 4am for the flight and not wanting to burn myself out early so that's basically all of Thursday! Slept pretty well except for when Jude busted in singing Ariana Grande (it's a running joke now he does it at every con but this time it was exceptionally loud).
Friday morning Tristan and I got up pretty early and went down to check out if the reg line. There was still quite the queue but not nearly as bad as Thursday night so we decided to wait. There was a little confusion as to what time the line would start moving as the website/guidebook said 10am but some of the staff were saying otherwise. I ended up leaving the line so I could get into Yuna while Tristan sat in line since it wasn't moving yet but I ended up taking too long and by the time I got back down he had gotten his badge (I guess the line started moving at 9 instead of 10). The badge quest would have to continue another time.
While walking down to go meet back up with Tristan I ran into Andrew a.k.a Vontography and he asked if I wanted to shoot. Honestly I was a bit of a mess in Yuna but we went down to the shore and got some cool photos! He already posted this unedited preview that makes me look way cooler than I am.
After we finished shooting I wandered around by myself for a little while which proved to be very difficult. Yuna is a bit difficult to wear and having paws on made it difficult to carry stuff with me so I only lasted a few hours haha. At least Deadpool told me I had the greatest boobs in New York. Thanks Deadpool.
Before I gave up on cosplaying for the day, we got a few shots out back that are just gorgeous. Seriously the shots are so beautiful it's a shame that I don't like how I look in this costume at all. I also sniped a pic of Stella Chu who was out shooting as well!
At this point my entire costume was falling to pieces and I looked like a disaster haha, how embarrassing. After shooting I felt both my helm and shoulder armor slipping and decided to catch the shoulders as helm fell to the ground. It didn't take too much damage but that was basically the nail in the coffin for this costume and I decided to go up and change.
I figured since I wasn't in costume anymore it'd be a good time to get my badge. The line at this point was almost non-existent and I got it in less than 10 minutes! We did a quick peek in the dealers room and a walk through of the artist alley but I didn't end up buying anything. I saw a bunch of stuff I really liked but I've been really hesitant to buy prints lately since I don't even have all the ones I own up on my walls. :(
We finished up in the artist alley and then it was time to get ready for my 'speed shoots'! I had planned an hour (4-5pm) both Friday and Saturday to meet up with people who wanted to shoot with me but weren't able to book a full slot. I figured it'd be a good opportunity to get a few quick snaps of their costumes without breaking the bank (it was basically a tip service).
I had enough people RSVP to fill up the time (shoots were about 5 min each) buuuut like over half the people didn't show up LOL. I wasn't upset or anything honestly I should have figured something so casual and loosely scheduled would have a lot of no shows with how stressful and busy Katsucon is for most people. I had fun just chilling in the corner and shooting with whoever did turn up. I'll dump a couple photos from the shoots below!
After shooting I turned in my camera for the night and we hit up the game room! Unfortunately I didn't actually play any game the whole weekend and I really regret that but I did watch Tristan play Pop'n for a bit which was fun (I was tired and cranky for a little while so didn't want to play haha). The hunger struck so we called New York Pizza (our savior last year when we couldn't go outside).
Honestly, the phone call to New York Pizza may have been the worst part of my convention LOL. The employee was the most incompetent person I have ever spoken to and the call took 3x as long as it should have. I'm not going to go into the details of it but seriously, New York Pizza guy from the phone, if you ever cross my path I will kill you.
Anyways we hang out in the game room a bit longer then chow down on some pizza, wings, and fries. I may hate the phone guy but New York Pizza is still so fire. OH ALSO Tristan debuted his secret cosplay. Selena stopped by while we were eating pizza and we were so glad because we figured she'd be one of the only people who got it hahah.
We kinda just hung out after dinner and eventually I decided to turn in since I had scheduled shoots pretty early the next day. As I was sitting in bed Jude busted in yelling 'I BROUGHT FRIEEENDS' and lo and behold a handful of people I know from Twitter followed behind. I was happy to see everyone but I ducked under the covers because I had already taken my wig and makeup off and didn't want everyone to see my ugly mug lol.
Anyways I got over it eventually and had a good time talking to everyone. We got a noise complaint so I was slightly peeved but no harm in the long run. Also CJ talked to me as if I was their best friend even though we've hardly ever interacted and that was cute and nice. :)
Eventually they left and I got to bed. No Ariana Grande that night.
Saturday morning I got up and ready once again much earlier than needed so I hit the floor for some hall shots! There were already a lot of people shooting and taking video so I took some BTS shots as well as sniped a couple cosplayers here and there.
Then came my actual planned shoots which went super well! There was only one group that couldn't make it and even then we were able to figure something else out later on and I even got to bump up all my other shoots since the people after were ready! Yay for getting done early. It was a little crowded but overall the shoots I did were so fun and relaxed.
I finished up my shoots then headed upstairs to change into Elphelt. We had a bit of a scare because Tristan's contact ripped in his eye but thankfully he got it out! Thanks to his and Hannah's help I was able to get in costume and hit the floor.
First stop was the beautiful doors across from the gazebo! Jude wanted to get a couple pics with me as Mika (Miphelt/Elka OTP) and I also got some nice photos taken of me in front of them by Tristan and some other togs who stopped me! I'm so glad as they have always been one of my favorite photo spots at Katsucon (I like than better than the gazebo tbh).
After this we walked around and did a couple shoots for friends then I ran into my friend Kyle! Kyle is one of the og AnimeIowa goers who I hadn't seen since I was probably 14 or 15 years old so it was great to catch up! We slowly made our way outside (I was super warm in this costume) and I even filmed for a couple CMVs! We hung out outside for a little while before I had to go in for SPEED SHOOTS 2.0 SATURDAY EDITION.
2nd round went basically like the first where a very small percent of those RSVP'd showed up but the shoots went really well! I managed to shoot fine even while wearing Elphelt so I'm glad that worked out (I just took off the more obtrusive pieces).
Ignore how sloppy the back looks LOL I need to get the dress taken in a bit whoops. Anyways I finished up the speed shoots and went back upstairs to recoop a bit (the heels were killers)!
That's when inspiration struck and Tristan's timbs continued being the star of Katsucon. And also I finally got to eat something but tfw crumbs.
I posted the picture on Twitter and it blew tf up so I just sat around laughing at all the responses for a while. Ya'll are too funny. I'm sad my belt straps are twisted but this picture is still priceless and going in the MOMA.
Anyways eventually I got up but still was not feeling the heels and threw on my Abibas instead to walk to Chipotle....Messy Bitch Cosplay strikes again.
Before reaching Chipotle we ran into Toni and Christen on the street, coincidentally they had also just gotten Chipotle! Legends only..
THEN WE REACHED THE PROMISED LAND but many others were there too! The line wrapped around the whole store but we know what we're about so we waited. (CHIPOTLE COUNT: 2)
We were walking back towards the Gaylord when we decided to stop for a couple of shots in the street. They turned out super pretty so I snuck into the West In bathroom to fix myself up and continue shooting! It was so much fun just shooting out in the streets and a lot of people (normies and congoers alike) stopped me for my picture out there. I really hope they didn't get my feet because I looked sloppy af in my Adidas still LOL.
We got back to the hotel eventually and KEPT GOING WITH OUR SHOOTING SPREE. It was late in the evening at this point but Tristan is a trooper and said he still wanted to shoot with me (he's the sweetest) so I got my feet back in those damned heels and hit the floor.
Being in Elphelt at night was super fun and I was able to actually spend some time on the gazebo level without it being insanely crowded. I talked to a ton of awesome people and got my photo taken by some awesome photographers as well as got filmed a few times!
We got some photos in the gazebo as well as tried to recreate this lovely shot I got in Elphelt last year.
Tristan and I hung out for a while shooting and we also got to hang out with Zach and Kyle for a little while! We hung out outside again..I enjoyed looking at all the lights reflect on the harbor at night and also watching the Voltron shoot take place where Pidge was a menace and stole everyone's still (this part is a joke I'm sorry Pidge).
I finally got out of costume after wearing her almost all day. We hung out a little longer and also walked around National Harbor a bit more in search of food but surprisingly nothing was open at like 1-2am (no surprise we're just idiots). It started to sprinkle a bit so we settled for overpriced candy bars in the hotel. We were gonna hit up the game room again but we were out for so long shooting and whatnot we were super tired and ended up turning in after Tristan fell asleep mid convo while sitting against a wall.
Before falling asleep drunk Hannah and Jude appeared and plopped down right on top of me. They laid on me spouting some nonsense and also confessing their love even though I gave them leprosy. It was very sweet and made me happy. Somehow Tristan slept through it all. I convinced them to get back in their bed after some time but I had to practically drag Jude to the other side of the room lmao.
I woke up later than planned Sunday but it wasn't a huge deal since I packed the night before. Checkout went pretty smooth and we really enjoyed the new luggage dropoff place they had since last year there was a massive line in the lobby and we ended up just sitting and watching our stuff anyways. This time we were able to drop off our stuff and actually leave so we went to the only place we could thing of.
CHIPOTLE COUNT: 3
Ok just kidding. Well, we did go to Chipotle but we also just walked around and stopped in cute shops as well as visited the little 'park' thing with the huge statues! I've always wondered where those were so it was cool to see them in person.
I also was a menace and bought a ton of chocolate AND ice cream from this little candy shop.
It was about time to leave at this point so we went and got our stuff and made our way back to the airport! I knocked tf out on the plane then ate a delicious meal made by Tristan's mom when we got back. She's the best and some homecooked real food really hit the spot after a con weekend. Unfortunately we could not stay the night so Zach and I headed back to good ol' Ames Iowa. I ended up getting home around 1am (rip).
Anyways that's........BASICALLY IT??? Katsucon was such a blast and I had SOOO much fun. Revelator Elphelt is definitely my new favorite costume and I enjoyed being her so much I'm glad it was so well received especially after feeling down about myself on Friday.
In summary: I love Tristan a lot and spending time with him is always a joy. On top of that I got to see all your lovely faces whether we hung out or if it was just in passing! AND ON TOP OF...BOTH OF THOSE...my shoots went super well and I even got some hall shots I really love. AND TRULY ABOVE ALL ELSE, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WAS...I had never eaten Chipotle and managed to do it 3 times over the weekend (jk you guys were the best part I swear). Wow! What a good con!! Until next time, Katsucon! 💖
