Colossalcon was such a blast! It was technically my second time going but last year I was mostly shooting so most of the convention I was experiencing for the first time. We started out leaving around 8am on Wednesday for our 9.5 hour drive to Sandusky. The drive was a lot of fun and didn't feel nearly as long as last year. We listened to some Bops from a Spotify playlist called "Oldies and Goodies" for most of the drive, whether or not all the songs met those criteria was up for debate though.
Eventually we reached the hotel, checked in, and set up some decor.
We stayed in combination suite and it was SO AMAZING. We had 13 people but it was still fairly spacious and having the kitchen was a huge plus. I will definitely be booking a suite for next year as well. :)
Most of our roommates also arrived Wednesday so we made a trip to Walmart to get food and then turned in early. I somehow managed to make the whole drive by myself so I was BEAT.
Thursday was our "Waterpark Day" so a few of us got up early to go enjoy the new slides and indoor park before the con started getting too busy. All the outdoor slides were super fun, I even went on the one where they put you in a tube then drop you out the bottom.
After a couple hours of the waterpark, we went back to our room and I decided to get into cosplay. ME??? WEARING A COSPLAY ON THURSDAY????? ABSOLUTE MADNESS.
I honestly thought I looked really bad as Tohru but she was so well received and that made me happy! Unfortunately, I did not end up wearing her again during the con but I'm glad I did for at least a couple hours while checking out the convention center.
After taking a look at the game room and artist alley, I figured I needed to change and get ready to shoot.
I'm always hesitant about shooting Love Live groups (well, big groups in general) because I'm more comfortable shooting 1-2 cosplayers but I'm so glad I took this one! Charlotte (Eli) and her group looked so great and I really loved how vibrant their costumes looked against the greenery. Here are a few photos from the shoot!
After shooting, we decided to hit the pool again and discovered that Zach had been Shredding The Gnar for a little while.
Inspired, Tristan gave it a shot and was also joined by Brett and Dan later on.
If I wasn't wearing a wig, I may have gave it a shot too but just watching was a riot itself. Honestly, Tristan was the funniest. While I don't think I could have done any better, the way his arms flailed was so cartoonish we were all dying.
It was getting suuuper humid so I think we went to the lazy river at this point...and then Jordan got a direct hit from one of the water jets. Wig? Snatched (not really it was fine).
After enjoying the pool and hot tub, we all went to Applebee's for dinner. The whole thing was pretty cursed and we ended up taking our food to go because it took so long the restaurant was actually closing when the food was ready. Tristan accidentally purchased games for $1.99 on the restaurant tablet machine thing, Jude got his perfect margarita spilled on him, and they ended up selling my food to someone else before making a new dish. I wasn't upset or anything it was kind of just a wild experience overall LOL.
By the time we got back (stopped by Walmart again - Victor and Yuri were there), it was past 1am and I figured I should go to bed as I had to get up early to shoot the next day.
SHOOT TIME. The bulk of my shoots were Friday morning, I only did a few but they were a lot of fun! Here are some photos from those. :)
I finished up my Saturday shoots in the waterpark. I'm reconsidering shooting at the waterpark at all next year because it is simply too sunny. Maybe I'll do it if I have an assistant who can hold a diffuser for me. ;-;
After shooting, I got into swimsuit Hinata. Huge thank you to Krista for letting me borrow her wig, headband, and coat for this last minute swim 'cosplay'...and Zach for letting me borrow both his normal sized kunai as well as the weirdly small ones.
I stayed in Hinata for maaaybe an hour and honestly swimsuit cosplay isn't really for me but I had fun and got cute photos with friends! I don't really enjoy hanging out poolside and not actually being able to get in the water was a bummer for me so I'll definitely plan better next year. Swimsuit cosplays are really fun in theory but it just made me want to swim personally!
Regardless, here's a little photo dump!
Despite me realizing swim cosplay wasn't really for me, I threw on another one after doing a walk around the dealers room. More photodumps because I don't have much to say, just havin fun at the outdoor park!
I think after that we actually went swimming again? Honestly Colossalcon was a big blur because we were there 4-5 days (and no, I wasn't drunk). But like, actual swimming this time and went on more slides! There was even a waterslide rollercoaster thing which was crazy fast and fun. Also the really disorienting toilet bowl slide. Good times.
And then cue the 3rd trip to Walmart before calling it a night because I wanted sweets LOL.
Saturday morning I got up somewhat earlier and started cooking breakfast! We had planned to do a pancake breakfast so I brought along two griddles. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed cooking with/for everyone and eating together! A lot of my favorite times at conventions happen in the hotel room so it was fun to share it with so many great people.
I am absolutely IN LOVE with this costume! It's so cute and flattering for my body type, and I love having big over the top hair accessories!
Tristan wasn't ready yet so I headed down to the convention center with Alex and Jordan to do some Purikura!
When I first heard there was gonna be Purikura at Colossal I was SO PUMPED but also worried that it would be really rushed and crowded. There was actually like no wait and they give you plenty of time to decorate, it was so much fun and my first time ever doing Purikura...I hope I can do it again soon!
After Tristan was ready, we walked around the con a bit and also ran into the other Granblue cosplayers! RIP Toni who I didn't get a Granblue photo with the entire weekend despite rooming together.
Big thank you to Ysabel for making Tristan's harness as well! I commissioned it pretty last minute as a gift and they did a great job on it. :)
It was almost 4:30pm at this point so I had to head back to the fields to do my speed shoots. Basically what it is is an hour timeframe where whoever wants to shoot with me could come and get a few photos for cheaper than what it'd be to book a full shoot. Here are a few of the photos from that!
Thank you to everyone that came out! If you came and don't see your picture, don't fret I've only edited a few because I'm more focused on my full shoots but they will come soon. :)
Overall, I think it went well but I don't know if I'll keep doing them in the future...maybe just with a select group of people because people love not showing up to these and not giving me any notice.
After taking a quick break in the room, it was back to Anila! Actually, I never took her off but for shooting I wore the costume without the coat which is actually....a crazy cute costume in itself. Thank you Bono for making even the under layer of this costume so fun to wear.
After hanging out around the con a little bit and playing some games, Tristan and I set off to the fields to shoot Polaroids for my Patreon as well as get a couple nice photos of Anila!
Both of us were getting bitten up pretty badly (I foolishly left my bug spray in the room) so we called it quits and headed back to the room. That's when Brett and Zach finally reappeared. They had essentially been gone since that morning and at this point it was like 8pm...what were they doing? Shredding the Gnar. Literally from open to close. The absolute madmen.
After making some more pancakes (gnarfuel) for our new surfing legends, I headed down to the game room with Tristan and Jordan.
We stayed in the game room until close (2am) and I really regretted not spending more time in there earlier! I played some ITG and Pump it Up (which I no longer hate, woo!) with Maya and I just had a moment remembering how much I love playing these games. I don't know what it is about playing at a convention that makes it so fun (for those of you who don't know, I own metal ITG pads and a Pop'n Music controller so I can play both at home anyways) but it's just so addicting.
They started shutting down a bit before 2am so we had to say our goodbyes to the machines but it was fun while it lasted!
I don't think I have much to say about Sunday...we checked out and spent the rest of my arcade credits then had to hit the road! I drove a few hours but thankfully Tristan made the bulk of the drive home (like 85% tytyty). We ended up listening the the No Sleep Podcast for the last few hours which was actually pretty fun. My favorite was the story about the Tall Dog.
And so...I guess that's the end! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you had a great con too if you were there. Thank you to all of my friends, roommates, anyone I spoke to at the con (even if briefly) for making it such a fun weekend. I love you all very much!
I'll leave you with a few more photos. Until next time!
